Tips on Caring for Your Jewelry January 25 2014, 0 Comments

Here are some great tips for caring for your jewelry!

-Always store your jewelry in a clean, dry place

-The best way to store your jewelry is in a fabric-lined jewelry case, or in a box that has different compartments and dividers. If you would rather use an ordinary box, no problem! Just wrap each piece individually in soft tissue paper.

-Do not jumble your jewelry together--you could scratch your gorgeous pieces

-Be very careful when taking your jewelry off when you wash your hands or the dishes. Don't leave your pieces on the rim of the sink--you don't want to lose your favorite ring or bracelet falling down the drain, never to be seen again!

-See your jeweler once a year to have your jewelry checked for any loose prongs, worn mountings or any general wear and tear.

-You should also visit your jeweler every six months to have your jewelry professionally cleaned to look brand new!

Follow these simple tips, and your jewelry will last a lifetime!

History of Engagement Rings | NYC Jewelry Artist January 05 2014, 0 Comments

It's proposal season!

Did you know when engagement rings first originated? Neither did we until we stumbled upon an article from 25karats.com!

The first engagement ring dates back all the way to our prehistoric ancestors, the cavemen! Archaeologists believe that men would place braided cords around the woman's wrist, waist and feet. This tradition then ended when the ancient Egyptians began using rings in their marriage ceremonies.

The first true example of an actual wedding band, or engagement ring started in Egypt about 2800 BC. Archaeologists uncovered several mummies from that era that were buried with silver or gold rings on their left hands. Ancient Egyptians believed that the left ring finger was connected to the heart, which is a tradition that we still use today!

The first diamond engagement ring Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave to his love when he proposed to her in 1477. It was a unique ring that featured several pieces of flattened diamonds that spelled the letter "M" for her name, Mary.

The tradition of giving rings didn't become popular until the 1700's with "posey rings" in Europe. "Posey rings" were bands that were inscribed with lines of poetry and given to sweethearts as a token of their love and affection.

In the 21st century, engagement have evolved. Be it  a traditional white solitaire diamond setting to a more edgy black or grey diamond setting a ring is and always will be extraordinary way to say, "I love you".

Catherine Angiel, who truly put Black Diamonds on the map, was featured in Life & Style this past week because of the inspiration from the 5ct Black Diamond Big gives Carrie at the end of SATC2.

Black Diamonds are being more and more recognized. When is the last time that you saw somebody wearing a black diamond ring? It's truly a unique stone and gives more character to today's already impeccable designs.

However, Ms. Anigel has been using Black Diamonds in her designs for years; I'm happy to see that the rest of the fashion world is finally catching up!

Black diamond gets play in 'Sex and the City 2' - National Jeweler

New York--Spoiler alert! Sex and the City fans will remember that at the end of the 2008 film, Carrie Bradshaw got engaged with a diamond-encrusted shoe rather than a diamond-encrusted ring. While it seemed a fitting engagement for the die-hard fashionista, fans who might have been gunning to see Carrie get a ring will finally get their wish.

Back for another round in Sex and the City 2, which opened at the No. 2 spot at the box office this weekend, Carrie and her trio of best friends, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte, sport jewelry throughout, but the piece that's getting fans talking is a 5-carat diamond ring from designer Itay Malkin.

The hefty carat weight makes for a talking point of its own, but the real buzz factor is the diamond's hue. For fearless fashionista Carrie--who was ready to get married in the first film wearing a bright blue feather on her head--a crystal clear diamond ring just wouldn't do.

In the final scene, Carrie's longtime love, Big, presents her with a black diamond ring, explaining "because you are not like anyone else."
